Looking for an internet service provider in Turkey? The right answer depends on how long you are staying. A two-week holiday, a three-month work stay and a permanent move all call for different set-ups. This guide explains how the Turkish market is organised, what each kind of provider asks of you, and where a portable WiFi rental fits alongside the big operators.

Who provides internet in Turkey

For most people in Turkey, internet comes from one of two directions: a mobile operator or a home broadband subscription. The names you will see everywhere, on shop fronts, at airports and in shopping malls, are the big operators Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. They sell mobile lines and data packages, and home internet subscriptions are part of the same market.

These providers are built around residents. Their standard products assume a local contract, identity verification and, for home internet, an address and an installation. That works well if you live in Turkey, but it is a lot of paperwork for a short-term visitor. A rental service such as StayinWifi sits on top of this market: it uses an operator's network, Turkcell's 4G/5G, and hands you a ready-to-use device without a contract.

Mobile lines: prepaid and contract

If you want your own Turkish mobile data, you choose between a prepaid line and a contract.

  • Prepaid tourist lines are sold at operator shops and airport counters. You need your passport, and the SIM goes into one phone. Tourist packages at airport counters are often priced higher than people expect.
  • Contracts are aimed at residents and come with longer commitments and ID checks.
  • IMEI registration: a foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM has to be registered after 120 days. For long stays this is an extra step and cost to plan for.

Our guide to buying a tourist SIM card in Istanbul walks through that process in detail.

Home internet for longer stays

Expats, students and remote workers who rent a flat for months often look at fixed home internet. With a traditional provider that usually means signing a contract, proving your identity and waiting for the connection to be set up at your address. Monthly contracts are designed for people who stay put, so they are rarely a fit for a few weeks or for someone who has not found a permanent address yet.

That gap is where a rental is useful: to be online from the first day in a new apartment, while you compare providers, or instead of a contract altogether if your stay is measured in weeks or a few months.

Which set-up for which stay

Holiday or business trip

For a stay of a few days to a few weeks, a pocket WiFi is the simplest route. You keep your own SIM and number, everyone in the family or team connects to the same device, and the internet goes with you from the hotel to meetings, taxis and day trips. Several months or a new move

For a longer stay, rent monthly. Longer rentals get a discount, and the device keeps you connected while you settle in, sort out a flat and decide whether a local contract is worth it. If you later sign up for home internet, you simply return the device.

The network behind StayinWifi

  • Up to 6 devices at once: phones, tablets and laptops.
  • 8–10 hours of battery, with a power bank, charging cable and adapter included.
  • An embedded SIM, so there is nothing to buy or insert, and no hidden fees.
