Tourist SIM Card in Istanbul: What to Know Before You Buy
Planning to buy a tourist SIM card in Istanbul? A Turkish SIM is one of the classic ways to get mobile data on a trip, and for some travellers it is the right choice. Before you head to a counter, though, it helps to know what the purchase involves: your passport, registration, the IMEI rule for foreign phones and the fact that one SIM serves one phone. Buying a tourist SIM in Istanbul
You can buy a tourist SIM at counters in the arrivals halls of Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), or at mobile operator shops in the city. Tourist packages bundle a fixed amount of data, sometimes with minutes, for a set period. The price and allowance depend on the package, and packages sold at the airport are often priced higher than you would expect.
What you need to bring:
- Your passport: the SIM is registered in your name.
- An unlocked phone that accepts a different SIM card.
- Time at the counter after your flight, before you can get online.
A Turkish SIM is not an anonymous purchase: the seller checks your passport and registers the line before it is activated, so each traveller who wants a SIM needs their own passport at the counter.
The 120-day IMEI rule
Turkey registers mobile phones by their IMEI number. A foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM has to be IMEI-registered after 120 days. For a typical holiday this does not matter, but for long stays, digital nomads and anyone who comes back often it is worth knowing before you rely on a local SIM.
A pocket WiFi does not involve this at all: your phone never takes a Turkish SIM, it simply joins a WiFi network.
One SIM, one phone
A SIM card connects exactly one phone. For a couple or a family that means buying and registering several SIMs, one passport each, or asking one person to run a hotspot from their phone all day. There are two more trade-offs:
- Your own number goes offline while the Turkish SIM is in the phone, so SMS codes from your bank or messages to your usual number will not arrive.
- Laptops and tablets without a SIM slot can only get online through someone's phone.

When a tourist SIM makes sense
A local SIM is a reasonable pick if you travel alone, your phone is unlocked, you want a Turkish phone number for local calls, and you do not mind spending time at a counter on arrival.
