How an eSIM works in Turkey
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you download to your phone with a QR code or an app. There is no plastic card to insert. Once it is active, your phone uses a local network for mobile data.
- Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked by your home carrier.
- It is best to install the eSIM before you leave home, while you still have a reliable WiFi connection.
- One eSIM serves one phone. Tablets and laptops need their own plan or a hotspot from your phone.
- The amount of data, the validity and any speed limits depend on the package you buy.
How a pocket WiFi works
A pocket WiFi is a small router with its own embedded SIM. You switch it on, enter the WiFi password shown on the screen, and your devices go online just as they would at home.
- Unlimited 4G/5G internet on the Turkcell and Türk Telekom networks, under a fair usage policy.
- Up to 6 phones, tablets or laptops connected at the same time.
- Works with any WiFi device, including older phones that do not support eSIM.
- 8–12 hours of battery, with a power bank, cable and adapter in the box.
- Your own SIM stays in your phone, so your number keeps working for calls and messages.

When an eSIM is the better choice
Be honest about your trip. An eSIM usually wins if:
- You travel alone and only need data on one phone.
- Your phone supports eSIM, is unlocked, and you are comfortable installing it before the flight.
- You do not want to carry or charge another device, or return anything at the end of the trip.
- Your data use is light: maps, messaging and some browsing.
If price is your main question, our guide to cheap eSIMs for travellers looks at the value of eSIM plans in more detail.
When a pocket WiFi is the better choice
A pocket WiFi usually wins if:
- You travel as a couple, a family or a group and want to share one connection.
- Someone in your group has a phone without eSIM support, or a phone locked to a carrier.
- You need a laptop or tablet online for work, school or streaming.
- You use a lot of data and would rather not watch a data balance run down.
- You want to keep your phone's battery for photos and maps instead of running a hotspot.
What to check before you decide
- Is your phone unlocked and eSIM-ready? Check in your phone settings or with your carrier before you buy anything.
- How many devices need internet? Count every phone, tablet and laptop in your group.
- Where will you be? A StayinWifi device works only inside Turkey, so it suits a trip that stays in the country.
- Do you still need your own number? With a pocket WiFi your SIM stays untouched. If you are thinking about a physical Turkish SIM instead, read our tourist SIM card guide for Istanbul first.

Internet penetration in Turkey and mobile coverage
Turkey is a well-connected country. Internet penetration is high, most people go online through their phones, and mobile networks cover the cities, the resort coasts and the main roads between them. In 2026 that means travellers rarely struggle to find a signal; the real question is how to get data onto their own devices without roaming charges.
Both an eSIM and a pocket WiFi use these local mobile networks, so coverage is similar in the places most tourists visit. A StayinWifi device runs on the Turkcell and Türk Telekom 4G/5G networks. All devices support 5G and automatically switch to 4G where 5G isn't available. Actual speed depends on local mobile network coverage, so expect the best results in city centres and airports and a slower connection in remote valleys or high in the mountains.
Can you use an eSIM and a pocket WiFi together?
Yes, and for some groups it is the most practical setup. One traveller can keep an eSIM on their own phone for data when walking around alone, while the pocket WiFi stays with the rest of the family or group and connects tablets, laptops and phones that do not support eSIM.
This works well on trips where people split up during the day, or where one person needs a laptop online for work in the evening. The pocket WiFi connects up to 6 devices at the same time with unlimited data, so heavy use such as video calls or uploading photos can go through it instead of using up an eSIM data package. Compare the options side by side above, then see pocket WiFi prices for your dates.
What a cheap eSIM price leaves out
The headline price of an eSIM is only part of the cost. Before you compare plans, check four things:
- Data and validity: a low price often means a small allowance or a short validity. If the trip is longer than the plan, you pay for a top-up or a second plan.
- What "unlimited" means: some plans sold as unlimited reduce speed after a daily amount, so read the fair use terms first.
- One plan per phone: tablets and laptops need another plan or a hotspot from your phone, which drains its battery quickly.
- Compatibility: a cheap plan is no bargain if your phone is locked or does not support eSIM.
For a group, count plans rather than prices. A family of four on a ten-day trip needs four eSIM plans that each last ten days, plus something for the children's tablet. With a pocket WiFi they rent one device for ten days and divide the total by four. Our guide to the cheapest portable WiFi in Turkey works through the cost per person.
