First time in Turkey and wondering how to stay connected? Turkey internet for tourists comes in five main forms: roaming with your home carrier, free WiFi, a tourist SIM card, an eSIM and a rented pocket WiFi. Each one suits a different kind of traveller. This overview explains how they work, what they cost you in time and convenience, and who each option is best for, so you can decide before you pack.

Contents

Roaming with your home carrier

The easiest option on paper: you land, switch on data roaming and your phone works as usual, with your own number. The catch is the bill. Data roaming charges in Turkey can be expensive, and a few days of maps, messaging and photo uploads add up quickly. Check your carrier's Turkey rates and any travel add-ons before you fly, and turn roaming off if you do not plan to use it.

Best for: very short trips, occasional use, or travellers whose plan already includes Turkey at a fair price.

Free WiFi in hotels, cafés and airports

Most hotels, many cafés and restaurants, and the airports offer free WiFi. It costs nothing and is handy for messages in the evening, but it has clear limits. Airport WiFi usually asks for an SMS code or passport verification and is time-limited, which does not help if your phone has no signal yet. Café and hotel networks stop working the moment you leave, just when you need a map, a ride app or a translation. Shared public networks are also less private than your own connection.

Best for: a back-up, not your main connection.

Tourist SIM card

A Turkish SIM card gives your phone a local number and a data package. You buy it at an airport counter or an operator shop, with your passport, and the line is registered to you. Your phone must be unlocked, and your home number is offline while the Turkish SIM is inside. One SIM connects one phone, and a foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM has to be IMEI-registered after 120 days. Read the details in our guide to the tourist SIM card in Istanbul.

Best for: solo travellers with an unlocked phone who want a Turkish number.

eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM you install by scanning a code or through an app, with no physical card. Your phone needs to be eSIM-compatible and unlocked, and it is best to install and activate the eSIM before departure, so you are not trying to set it up without internet on arrival. Your own number usually stays available alongside it. Data depends on the package you buy, and like a SIM, an eSIM serves one phone. Our eSIM Turkey guide compares it honestly with pocket WiFi.

Best for: tech-savvy solo travellers with a recent phone.

Pocket WiFi rental

A pocket WiFi is a small, battery-powered router with its own embedded SIM. Your phones, tablets and laptops connect to it like any WiFi network, so nothing on your phone changes and your own SIM and number stay active. With StayinWifi you get:

  • Unlimited internet on Turkcell's 4G/5G network, under a fair usage policy.
  • Up to 6 devices connected at the same time, ideal for couples, families and groups.
  • 8–10 hours of battery, plus a power bank, charging cable and adapter in the box.
  • Flexible pick-up: 24/7 at Istanbul Airport, Sabiha Gökçen and Trabzon Airport, at our Bursa office, delivery to your hotel or Airbnb, or shipping anywhere in Turkey.

The device works only inside Turkey and has to be returned with all accessories at the end of the rental. See all pick-up locations.

Best for: anyone travelling with others, using a laptop, or wanting to keep their own number.

Which option is right for you?

If you travel alone for a few days with a recent unlocked phone, an eSIM or a local SIM can be enough. If you are a couple, a family or a group, want to work from a laptop, or simply want to keep your own number for messages and bank codes, a pocket WiFi is usually the most practical choice: one device, one booking, everyone online. Once you have decided, our step-by-step guide on how to get internet in Turkey walks you through the set-up.

StayinWifi rental starts from €5.90 per day with no hidden fees, and longer rentals get a discount. Reserve your device on the booking form, read the FAQ for returns and accessories, or ask our support team on WhatsApp, 24/7.
